Growing pains

By Paige Herman-Axel on Aug 2, 2013

Kids aren’t the only ones who experience growing pains… This weekend I learned that moms can experience them, too, and in a big way at that. In fact, the concept of things “happening in threes” happened in our house, and by the end of the weekend I was a bumbling mess.

First, my son started coming out of his room on his own (and if you’ve been following my blog you know this has been a topic of discussion more than once). Yes, this is a positive step, as I don’t have to be jarred out of my slumber at 3am by continuous “MOMMY!” until I go into his room to find his stuffed animal. Had this been the only milestone of the weekend, I’d probably be totally fine.

Then on Saturday we went for a haircut and my son followed through with the “short and spiky.” (This, too, has been another topic of discussion.) Seeing his beautiful blonde hair all over the floor and almost not recognizing him every time I saw him for the remainder of the day definitely pushed me very, very close to the edge of a breakdown.

But the straw that broke the camel’s back (so to speak) was my son’s declaration that he no longer wants to take baths, and that he was only taking showers from now on. Yes, this definitely makes my life easier, but it makes it all too apparent that every last vestige of my “baby” is gone. Forever. And I don’t have a second one bringing up the rear.

So I’m dealing with these growing pains as best I can, and I know the changes will continue. At the end of the day I’m beyond proud of the little boy he’s become, and I look forward to seeing how he continues to evolve. I’m just hoping the next set of milestones doesn’t drive me to stick my head in the oven.
