DIY- Chic and Rustic Console Table

By Jaya Pandey on Jul 22, 2014

A Console table!! For an Apartment? Where do you plan to put it? The entrance is too busy for it. But I want it at the foyer. ‘It won’t fit there’. Then I will make one to fit there.

- My mind during a debate over Console table

Who doesn’t love a console table? That little (when compared to a house) place to put all those cute collectibles you have, especially at the foyer, where this part of your personality greets your guests. In apartments however, it a different story. We don’t have so much space to fit it and entrances are narrower than individual houses. We are in this apartment for a year now and we will be continuing in it for this year as well. So far I decorated ‘my home’ scantily because I was not sure when we have to move to another place. But now I have another year in my hand and I have decided to give some personality to my space.

Our apartment is big enough, it is two bedroom and single bathroom (by choice). I started slowly with the whole decorating thing, picking one space at a time. So far I worked on the bathroom and Vidhi’s nursery room. And now I have decided to take over the living room. This is gonna be a big one and this console table is first step towards it. The table is visible from living room due to which I count it as extended part of the room. I pondered for a long time on how to make it and finally decided to recycle some of my old furniture. We have a small dress and its outer structure broke. I use the two dressers as storage box. So I picked one of these boxes and some wooden crate frames (pallet) to make this table. Part of my ‘Mission Living room Makeover’ is to make the space vibrant and chic. Due to this reason, I decided to paint a pattern on this table in chic blue color. I used spray paint/primer from Krylon and the color is ‘Island Splash’. I like that name. One 12 oz can costs $3.67 and you get a wonderful finish on the furniture in just that much. Plus it has primer too. Perfect combo for DIY-ers like me.

I am pretty happy about how the table turned out to be. And I am also glad about my many small DIYs that ended up on top of this table. The letter ‘W’ for Welcome, the paper duck, the elephant pattern planter (also the plant in it because I sowed it), the Eiffel tower wall decal, the Taj Mahal wall decal and the wire vine ball. Clearly I will be adding and removing items from this collection but for now I am more than happy with it. Here is how I came up with this table.

-Materials required-

1 pallet,

1 wooden dress to be recycled,

1 can Krylon Spray paint + primer,

few nails,

1 hammer,

washable glue,

wax paper

-Making pallet stand-

I have assembled all the steps in a collage below. Please see it for better understanding.

-I had one pallet and I cut it in half with my cute little wood saw. I got two wooden pieces and two frames as shown below.

- These two frames worked as four legs for the table. All I had to do was to put the two wooden pieces to hold these four legs to stand.

- I put the two pieces in zigzag manner between these two frames and nailed them there. All I have to do now was to reverse the drawer from dresser and the table is ready. If you want more sturdy table, consider doubling the pallet legs of the table. My table is good enough and is not shaky.

-Pasting the pattern on the table-

I have assembled all the steps in a collage below. Please see it for better understanding.

- I used wax paper to cut pattern out of it. The wax paper was impermeable to the paint (I tested it before deciding it to use for pattern). I did not throw away the cut outs of this pattern as I planned to use them for the sides of the drawer.

- It is good to have sand paper to rub on the furniture before painting. But if you don’t have it, use a new Scrotch bite utensil scrub. I used it and it worked well. Wipe the furniture with damp cloth after scrub.

- Next I pasted this wax paper on the sides of drawer. It is good to paste the inner sides well to avoid paint from leaking under it. I pasted the wax paper pattern in the front of the drawer and the cut outs on the sides of the drawer.

- Let it dry for half an hour to one hour.

-Painting the table-

I have assembled all the steps in a collage below. Please see it for better understanding.

- Do spray painting in open area. I did it in the lawn in front of my apartment. Also cover your work area with drop cloth or newspaper.

- Once the patterns are dry, start spray painting on it as shown in the photo below. Let it dry for next one hour although I love this Krylon spray paint as it dries up real quick.

- Meanwhile, I spray painted the pallet stand that I prepared earlier.

- Once the paint has dried up, remove the wax paper and you will see the pattern come up. The washable glue will still be every where. Use damp cloth to remove this glue.

- Let this whole table stay in your patio or an open area to let the smell of paint go away.

Here is the final product of all this hard work, a cute, chic and rustic console table for small entrances like that of my apartment. Isn’t it cute? I love the pattern and the finish that I got from this paint. Hope you guys liked it too. Share your views with me.
